Mandalay, Myanmar: fruits, ice cream and more street foods

Image
ULTIMATE MYANMARESE STREET FOOD: Pig mask and other internal organs in sticks. One has to cook it by dipping it in a boiling liquid in the center. The containers on the side are the condiments and the red ones must be chili... *** Watermelon for 900 kyatts. *** The whitish green watermelon. *** Sayote or squash leaves. *** Melon. *** I'm holding a honeydew. *** Golden-orange Papaya. *** Some deep-fried stuff: crabs, shrimps and some floured food. *** Just like the Thai papaya pickle. The woman is using the mortar and pestle to mash the spices and then she adds this to the raw green papaya. *** Must be jelly sweets. *** Cold desserts to quench the sun-dried palates. *** Ice cream from Nylon Ice cream parlor.  Quite a following among the locals for this dirty a.k.a. home-made ice cream. *** Rainbow ice cream. Choices vary from tropical fruit like Durian to the classic ones  like chocolate and vanilla.  ***

Buko Pandan ice cream and gulaman

Image
We made a buko-pandan flavored gulaman (jelly) following the store-bought packet instruction. This one made 6 cups of jelly. Since it was scorching hot today, we decided to buy Buko Pandan ice cream and top the same with the solidified jelly.... Charaaaaan, it was an instant hit... Here is my first cup of Buko Pandan ice cream topped with gulaman and decorated by the umbrella cocktail decoration (courtesy of Noynoy's collection)... This quenched our longing for coldness today...  Buko Pandan ice cream Our formed gulaman

Sampling some food inside UST Campus

Image
Not only food chains are present in the campus but also this sorbetes cart,  and take note how it is named! *** A dumpling from one of the stalls serving Chinese dishes.. *** Yummy Lychee and Jelly. *** The little boy is unusually happy waiting for his order:  SOMETHING WRAPPED and must be picked with a chopstick! LOL *** Ice-cold Milk Tea. *** The boy who won't share a bit of his roll. His Motto: If I can't chopstick, I can pick it! ***

Easy Bugnay Jelly

Image
4 cups bugnay 6 cups brown sugar Wash bugnay ang remove stem.  Press with both hands until the juices come out of the berries. Separate the juice and pulp from the seeds by using not-so-fine strainer In a pan or small casserole without cover, bring to boil the juice and pulp of bugnay berries Add brown sugar and stir until dissolved. Let boil for 30 minutes still without cover and stir.  In a low fire, continue heating the syrup for about 30 minutes until it thickens a bit. TIP: The syrup is ready if it does not separate or dissolve easily when dropped in a glass of water. Also, if the syrup does not break when spilled from a spoon about a foot high from the casserole.  Sterilize glass jar and transfer the jelly.  Let cool and refrigerate.

Before Six Diet's Top Posts

By GERLIE M. UY Here are the Top Ten posts in my two year stint as food and home-cook recipe blogger from 2010 to 2012. Two surprising high hits for viewers are my entries on Fish Soup with Kulitis which earns 80 viewers which I find amazing as "kulitis" is not a popular green leafy vegetable and Fish Soup with Kamote Tops which earned 93 hits. But both did not make it to the top ten though. Here are the top ten recipe with links that are always called for by the viewers (but I'm not sure if they're called to be cooked), and the number one which has 2273 viewers is unexpected as it has beaten my sushi, summer roll and pad thai.
