Foot and Fire

Malalison Island is only a small island with a population of 750 and registered voters numbering to 400. The only populated area is concentrated at the back of the sand bar which serves as entrance to  the Island. There, the barangay hall is located as well as the basketball court which serves as their plaza as well. It was a quiet afternoon in November when I visited Malalison the first time and I can sense that the water was not as high as when I revisited the cave part in April shortly just after noon. What I immediately noticed about the rock is the a human head bust in the rock formation. Also, I sensed immediately that the summer sun dried out the same and it looked lifeless, unlike the rock I first visited.      After my Palawan vacation together with my parents, cousin and friends, I decided that it is indeed the ultimate destination that represents our archipelagic riches, with her string of islands, fine white sand stretches of beaches, giant karsts, cool caves, different corals, colorful fishes, lush mangroves, and infinite series of blue waters. Added to that riches is our signature Filipino smile which can easily be found everywhere in Palawan, from the tour guides, the boatmen and often, the Visayan-speaking pedestrians. Our day started with a meeting at the airport. My cousin Cooky with her two friends Sharon and Marissa emerged in the airport fresh from their respective hectic nursing duty at St. Luke's Medical Center, and two more friends of hers, Jo and Jess, a mother and daughter tandem, came from Iloilo City while I and my parents and family friend Nida, came in the airport in travel lite mode. We took the Tour A in El Nido. We rented the boat for P2,500, mask and snorkel (P75 each) and two kayaks (P700 each). We started the day with the secret lagoon, then the small and big lagoon then the zimisu beach and capped the day in the 7 commando beach where we enjoyed a sunless swimming as it rained on our way to the beach after the zimisu beach but then the rain stopped in the middle. We had a great time swimming and playing in the sand. Malalison Island, Culasi, Antique. I loved this rock formation. It is just so sad that there are graffiti on it. see on my back... Malalison Island (a.k.a Mararison Island) is a calm, nature-submissive and awe-inspiring island to visit, contrary to her name which translates to "argumentative" for the word lalis or "disobedient" for the description to a prodigal son. Located in Culasi, Antique, Malalison is the nearest island to access from the mainland. We reached the island from the Culasi wet market after riding a medium fishing boat (P800) for roughly 20 minutes. We stopped at the barangay hall located on the right end of the island where we registered (P10/pax fee) our names. There are residents in this small barangay of Malalison Island.
