Humble Pie, autobiography of Gordon Ramsay
Humble Pie
Gordon Ramsay
Autobiography, 2006
Nice read. Written twelve years ago but still introduces Gordon Ramsay very well to those who seldom watches tv series but had been a follower for once by Masterchef US. Though I am an open hater of swearing as while they may represent hatred, jealousy, irritation, fear, anxiety, mood swings, etc to the speaker, swearing does not communicate to the receiver the message well and they may be everything ill but then nothing. But I was surprised that I finished the not-so-lengthy fast-paced narrative of Ramsay who is fast-talking and known as ill-swearing cook in London. The book is filled with vulgar slangs and swears e.g. bollocks, arsehole, fuck, shag etc but then I kind of smile at them in the end. This is because I am reading, not hearing them. Anyway, I still can't believe it that I was hooked by the life story of Ramsay, a perfectionist in kitchen which explains why his swearing is a bad habit. His first TV series are live and involves below standard kitchens, untrained street cooks, and celebrities and he demanded strict quality control in his kitchen. I must have liked him in Masterchef US because the same is not live. Actually Ramsay pointed out that he stepped back on his previous TV projects after realizing his temper. But all these impression squeezed out, I liked the guy. He does not smoke or drink alcohol and put all his energy in learning the loops of the kitchens in big restaurants and observing the flair of big-name chefs despite the tempers and money motives. All these because he grew up with an alcoholic father who did domestic violence against his mother. His addiction is workaholism and it is so funny how he relates this in his book and still did not "agree" with the rehab doctors of his heroin addict brother Ronnie. Honest and straightforward. Not trying to have a heart, but he actually has. Ramsay made it big financially wise but he was awarded for his services in the industry, that made him do more. I share his frustration why consumers line up in fastfoods and we don't cook anymore. He will try his best to help change the eating habit. These are why, I get the title, Humble Pie.
What's wrong with smoked chicken and papaya salad?
P.S.
I don't want to eat in the restaurant of that sneaky ill-tempered out-of-bound Marco no matter his michellin stars because I believe that food we eat should be a product of love, time and discipline.
